Mango Radish Delish Relish

Story: This recipe is about two very different ingredients coming together to form an exceptional flavor. Mango and Radish - this relish adds a nice twist to a usual grilling menu.

It reminds me of a cliche from my school days - Unity in diversity - the message was everywhere for kids to see.. when it was the adults who needed it mostly. Let's watch my favorite video from that time while we savor the recipe

Source: A book on Salsas by Silvana Franco

Time: 30 mins

Ingredients: Serving for four
  • 1 close to ripe mango - cut into half inch chuncks - For my friends in India - get the crunchy, not so sweet somewhat tart variety of mango (Totapuri in Maharashtra)
  • 12-15 radishes - cut into small pieces
  • 2 tbsp Olive oil
  • Juice of 1 lemon
  • 1/2 tsp tobasco sauce - I used Sriracha instead
  • 3-4 pink peppercorns crushed coarsely (I used sichuan peppercorns instead)
  • Handful cilantro leaves finely chopped
  • salt to taste
Recipe: Add the mango chunks and radish pieces to a salad bowl. In a separate bowl mix the olive oil, lemon juice and tobasco sauce and whisk the mixture into a dressing. Add to the salad bowl and mix well. Add peppercorns and cilantro, mix well. Cool the salad in the fridge for an hour or two before serving.

You will be surprised to find the strong flavor of radish toned down by the dressing while a cool-crunch complements the sweet-sour mango.
